Shakib Al Hasan quits T20Is, with his last Test match expected to be in Dhaka, depending on security checks.
Shakib Al Hasan, one of Bangladesh’s top cricketers, has announced his immediate retirement from T20 Internationals.
The 37-year-old all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan, has announced that the upcoming Dhaka Test against South Africa in October will be his final match in Test cricket, signaling the slow end of his remarkable international career.
Shakib made this announcement ahead of the Kanpur Test against India, saying that from now on, he will only play for Bangladesh in One Day Internationals (ODIs).
His retirement from T20 Internationals (T20Is) follows a historic performance in the 2024 T20 World Cup, where he became the tournament’s all-time leading wicket-taker with 50 wickets.
“I have spoken with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) about my Test cricket plans, and if everything goes well, my last Test will be in Mirpur,” Shakib stated.
However, there are still security concerns, as Cricket South Africa has not yet cleared the series due to recent unrest in Bangladesh.
Shakib’s decision comes amid political instability in Bangladesh, which led to the fall of the Awami League-led government, raising safety issues for Shakib, who is also a member of parliament.
Shakib ends his T20I career with 129 matches, scoring 2551 runs and taking 149 wickets.
He hinted that the 2025 Champions Trophy might be his final international appearance in ODI cricket.
